Buying Anti-Spyware Programs: Coming Up with a Reliable Short List

If you’re considering getting anti-spyware for your computer system or network, then you’ve been informed of the possible ways your Internet security could be compromised. This decision to get anti-spyware is a smart move.

Now comes the part where you have to figure out how you should go around buying one. This is where this article can help.

First off, you should know that not all anti-spyware programs are for sale. There are some that are offered for free, and their batting average is not that bad. In fact, the most popular anti-spyware around, Spybot: Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition can be downloaded for free.

However, great as these programs are, they still have limitations and may not be able to handle more demanding requirements – requirements which you may have.

In this case, considering purchasing commercially available spyware should be a good move in securing your computer system. Below are some considerations you should think about in deciding what anti-spyware to buy.

1. Is your system an extensive network of computers?

If it is, then you should consider anti-spyware programs that work specifically with a network. Otherwise, you would probably have to install the program in every single computer. If you have at least a hundred workstations, installing alone could be a daunting task, much more performing a scan on every single workstation.

Getting a program designed to work centrally will make installation and administration of the program a more streamlined task. Scans are coordinated and your entire system becomes much more thoroughly covered. One of the leading programs of this design is Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware Enterprise Edition, which costs around $20 to $30 for each seat, depending on how may licenses you get. It may seem pricey, but worth the security it offers in protecting your network.

However, if you have only a few seats in your network (say for a home or small office environment) then anti-spyware designed to stand alone inside a single computer could be a cheaper, but still a comparatively effective choice.

2. How reputable is the program?

Of course, anti-spyware creators will boast that theirs is the best one around. While you may not doubt those claims, it is best to seek more unbiased opinions from industry experts. Visit websites that specialize on Internet security and check out their opinions on current anti-spyware offered. Seek out recommendations on online discussion groups as well as product reviews from reputable magazines / websites.

3. What are your requirements?

Most commercially available anti-spyware programs are capable of handling the requirements of most Internet users. But if you feel you need to beef up your own security (especially for a very wide network), and that you have special needs standard programs may not be able to meet, then consider getting a custom-built program designed to address your specific requirements.

This also allows you a greater range of flexibility of what can and cannot be done in managing your network’s security. Another advantage is that it is possible to bundle in other Internet tools like anti-virus software and pop-up blockers. Remember though, as with most customized products, a premium on price is added.

4. Technical Support

If you’re going to make an investment to secure your computer system, one great value-for-money feature is access to live technical support. Unlike a standard FAQ sheet, being able to consult with an expert allows you to get answers and solutions to unforeseen problems and complications. Access to such support can be through email and / or phone.

These points of consideration should help ease the quandary of which anti-spyware program to acquire. As you supply the answers to the questions, you’ll find that the once long list of anti-spyware programs become shorter and shorter. Hopefully, at the end, you will have a reliable short list of suppliers who can help you secure your network from those pesky spyware.
